Digital Marketing Mistakes We See Towson Business Owners Making

Published on November 4, 2026

Published by Patrick Kurowski

The digital marketing mistakes Towson business owners make usually come back to one thing: not understanding how search engines decide who shows up first.

As Towson business owners, we all want to reach customers in the moments that matter most to them, and more of those moments now start with a Google search or a question typed into an AI tool like ChatGPT. Showing up at the top of Google Maps, or as one of the default answers an AI tool gives, has become one of the most valuable positions a local business can hold.

My name is Patrick Kurowski, and I’m the CEO and founder of MarketKeep, a digital marketing agency in Towson, Maryland. Since 2016, I’ve helped small business owners in Towson and across the United States plan, place, and optimize their digital marketing, and we’ve worked with 453 clients along the way. The biggest lesson from all of that work is how much misinformation is out there about optimizing a website and marketing a business online.

So instead of another list of generic tips, I want to walk you through three real scenarios: how to rank a roofing company, a plumbing company, and a handyman on the first page of search in Towson. The principles behind each one apply to almost any business in Towson, Maryland, and beyond.

If you’d rather have us look at your business directly, request an SEO evaluation from our Towson team.

Brief Rundown

We searched for a roofer, a plumber, and a handyman in Towson, MD and broke down why the businesses on the first page of Google rank there. Eight mistakes kept everyone else off page one: a neglected Google Business Profile, missing local citations, weak on-page SEO, copied location pages, low-quality backlinks, empty GBP services and products, relying on citations alone, and the wrong primary category.

How Google Search Results Are Laid Out for a Roofing Company in Towson, MD

To see where businesses go wrong, it helps to break down what a Towson homeowner sees when they search “roofing company in Towson, Maryland.” The first page is made up of several sections, and each one is earned in a different way.

Google Local Services Ads (Google Guaranteed)

Google Local Services Ads for a roofing company search in Towson, MD

At the very top are Google Local Services Ads, often called LSAs or Google Guaranteed listings. This is a paid program. Your business has to be verified by Google to take part, and you pay only when someone calls you or submits a quote request through the ad.

Sponsored Google Ads

Sponsored Google Ads result for a roofing company in Towson

Below the LSAs are sponsored results, which are standard Google Ads. Every time someone clicks one of these ads, the roofing company behind it pays for that click. Google keeps adjusting how these paid placements appear, so the layout of the first page continues to change.

The Google Map Pack (Google 3-Pack)

Google Map Pack showing the top roofing companies in Towson, MD

Next comes the Google Map Pack. At MarketKeep we call it the Google 3-Pack, because it usually shows the top three businesses located in the area. You can buy ad space here too, but the Map Pack is also one of the main ways to reach the first page organically. Your position is driven by local SEO, and most of all by your Google Business Profile.

Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overview recommending three roofing contractors in Towson

Google now also shows AI Overviews, which pull information from Google’s Gemini AI to help searchers choose a roofer. What appears there is influenced by what is on your website, which makes your site more important than it has ever been. In our Towson search, the AI Overview recommended the same three roofers shown in the Map Pack (AC Matthews, Allied Remodeling, and Towson Roofing Pros) along with their Google ratings, so your Google Business Profile shapes what AI tells searchers too.

Organic Search Results

Finally, there are the organic results, the traditional list of website links. Which pages earn those

spots is decided by on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

With that layout in mind, here are the mistakes we see most often, and what the roofing companies ranking in Towson are doing differently.

Mistake 1: Neglecting Your Google Business Profile in Towson

AC Matthews Roofing and Exteriors ranks in the 3-Pack for “roofing company in Towson” for several reasons, and the first is reputation. They have 170 Google Business Profile reviews. Two of the biggest factors in Map Pack rankings are your proximity to the person searching and how reputable your business looks, so a strong address and a strong review count both work in your favor.

Reviews are not the whole story, though. Allied Remodeling is based in Timonium and still ranks for Towson searches, and Towson Roofing Pros appears in the 3-Pack with only two reviews. If review count were the only factor, neither would be there. Meanwhile, plenty of established roofing companies in the area struggle to break in. In most cases, the difference comes down to how actively the Google Business Profile is managed and whether the business has built up its local citations.

Upload and Rename Photos on Your Google Business Profile

The more photos you consistently upload to your Google Business Profile, the better it tends to perform, because regular activity tells Google the profile is active. Many Towson business owners forget how many usable photos are already sitting on their phones from past jobs. Go through them and start adding them to your profile.

Don’t upload them blindly, though. Before adding a photo, rename the file so it describes the job and location, such as “roof-replacement-towson-md.jpg” instead of “IMG_4821.jpg.” It is one of the simplest steps you can take, and in our experience it helps businesses show up in the 3-Pack more consistently.

Set Hours of Operation That Match When Customers Search

Google has adjusted its algorithm to match what searchers want, and one pattern we’ve noticed in service industries is that businesses listed as open longer tend to appear in the 3-Pack more often. AC Matthews Roofing and Exteriors is listed as open 24/7, and so is Allied Remodeling. Other roofing companies in the same results close at 5 or 6 p.m. You can see how search favors the businesses that are available when customers are looking. List the hours you can really answer the phone, and if you offer emergency service, make sure your profile shows it.

Publish Google Business Profile Posts Every Week

Recent Google Business Profile posts from AC Matthews Roofing & Exteriors

Google Business Profile posts can be offers, updates, or events. We tell the small business owners we work with to treat their Google Business Profile the way they’d treat Facebook or Instagram. The more active it is, the more signals you send that the business is active, and that activity can help improve your rankings in the Map Pack.

Mistake 2: Overlooking Local Citations for Your Towson Business

Your Google Business Profile should come first because it is the best known and most used listing. It is not the only one that matters, though. Local citations play a large role too. A local citation is any website where you can list your business name, address, and phone number (often called NAP).

Look at the search results for roofers in Towson and you’ll see citations everywhere. The Better Business Bureau ranks on page one with a page dedicated to roofing contractors near Towson. Every business listed there can include its name, address, phone number, website, and description, and that listing helps it reach the first page. Yelp and GAF’s roofing contractor directory also rank on page one, and further down you’ll find sites like Angi, Houzz, and Reddit.

Each of these is a place to list your business, and each one counts as a local citation. Ranking in the 3-Pack is not only about managing your Google Business Profile. It is also about other trusted websites confirming that you are a roofing contractor in Towson, and that is an opportunity a lot of local businesses leave on the table.

Since 2016, we’ve helped Towson business owners reach the first page of search results, and correct Google Business Profile management combined with consistent citations has been one of the biggest factors in that success. See how our SEO services for small businesses handle both.

Mistake 3: Leaving Towson Keywords Out of Your On-Page SEO

Further down the first page are the organic results, and getting there depends on on-page SEO. On-page SEO refers to the keywords built into your website, and the sites that reach page one are usually the ones with a proper on-page structure.

S&K Roofing is a good example. They’re based in Sykesville, the corner of Maryland where it is never quite clear whether you’re in Baltimore County, Carroll County, or Howard County. So how does a Sykesville roofer reach the first page for Towson? Look at their page and you’ll see they did an excellent job working the target keyword through the content.

Meta title and meta description for S&K Roofing’s Towson page

Their meta title specifically mentions roofing in Towson, Maryland, and their meta description says they provide roofing services in Towson, Maryland. On the page itself, they use a single H1 tag, “Roofing, Windows, Doors & More in Towson, MD,” which matters for SEO. Two of their H2 subheadings mention Towson as well, including “Schedule With S&K Roofing in Towson, MD,” and the body text mentions Towson seven times. Those elements are a big part of why they appear on page one.

H1, H2, and H3 heading structure on S&K Roofing’s Towson page

Use this as a checklist for your own Towson service page:

  • A meta title that names your service and Towson, MD.
  • A meta description that tells searchers you provide that service in Towson.
  • One H1 tag that includes the service and the location.
  • H2 and H3 subheadings that reference the service and Towson where it reads naturally.
  • Body text that mentions Towson in context, not stuffed into every sentence.

Mistake 4: Copying the Same Location Page for Towson, Timonium, and Beyond

One detail in these results stands out. AC Matthews Roofing and Exteriors ranks in the Map Pack, but their website no longer appears in the organic results on page one for “roofing company in Towson.” It has slipped to page two. That is because of a major shift over the last year that many small business owners still don’t understand or haven’t corrected.

For years, websites got away with creating one local landing page, such as “roofing company in Towson,” then copying it to make “roofing company in Timonium” and changing only the town name. The result was duplicate or thin content across the whole site.

Google now evaluates every page of your website on its own. We run each page through a version of Google’s helpful content self-assessment, which comes down to three questions:

  • Who: Is it clear who stands behind this page and who the target audience is?
  • How: Does the content explain how the business will help the customer, or does it only describe a process?
  • Why: Does the page give a homeowner a reason to contact the company, and give Google a reason to rank it above its competitors?

When every location page says the same thing, Google concludes you aren’t doing anything different and you’re no longer the best answer, so it pushes those pages further down. Whether you look at AC Matthews’ Towson page or another of their location pages, such as Glenelg, the content is nearly identical. The Glenelg page even embeds a map of their Frederick office, so very little on it is specific to Glenelg. Every page on your website needs to be unique to earn a spot on the first page.

The first roofing company with a large backlink profile is Magnum Home Services, whose homepage has 705 backlinks from 402 referring domains. AC Matthews has 32 backlinks from 18 referring domains, and when you click into those referring domains, nearly all of them are local citations: sites like Roofer Rate, Find Local Experts, Baltimore Top Rated, Five Star Home Service Pros, and Maryland Business Near Me. Those are the kinds of links helping them reach page one.

The Ranking Structure That Works for a Towson Roofing Company

AI tools are looking for the best answer, just as Google is. If you maintain your Google Business Profile and local citations, use a proper on-page SEO structure with a unique page for each service and location, and earn the right kind of backlinks, you put your Towson business in position to reach the first page of Google and to appear in AI-generated answers.

How to Rank a Plumbing Company on the First Page in Towson, MD

A search for “plumber Towson” looks a lot like the roofing results. Sponsored ads sit at the top, the Google Map Pack comes next, and Google’s AI Overview follows, largely repeating the plumbers already shown in the Map Pack. Below that are the organic results, decided by on-page and off-page SEO. When we recorded this walkthrough, the 3-Pack showed Caton’s Plumbing, Hardy Plumbing, and Plumber Towson Baltimore, with a sponsored listing for Len The Plumber.

Google Map Pack and AI Overview for plumber in Towson, MD

The plumbing search also teaches a few lessons the roofing search did not, starting with Hardy Plumbing.

Why Hardy Plumbing Ranks in the Towson Map Pack From Loch Raven Boulevard

Hardy Plumbing is not in the center of Towson. They are not on York Road or near the Towson Circle. They are out on Loch Raven Boulevard, and Google even labels them a “Plumber in Parkville, Maryland.” Yet they hold a 3-Pack spot for Towson searches, and two things explain most of it.

First is the address. Their Google Business Profile lists 8517 Loch Raven Blvd, Towson, MD 21286, so even on the far edge of town they are still a Towson business in Google’s eyes. Second is reputation: Hardy has 269 Google reviews with a 5.0 rating.

Hardy Plumbing’s Google Business Profile with a Towson address and 269 reviews

Compare that to plumbers closer to the heart of town. W.A. Gambrill Plumbing sits about three blocks from York Road and has 15 reviews. C.A. Taciak & Sons has 34. Robert Griffin Plumbing has one, United Air Temp has 90, and Oriole Basement Waterproofing, which also offers plumbing services, has 42. Hardy’s review count is several times higher than any of them, which is how a business on the outskirts reaches the Map Pack for searches in central Towson. The same list shows that reviews alone are not enough either. Heil Plumbing has 468 reviews and Saffer Total Home has about 2,000, but both are listed outside Towson. Fluid Plumbing & Heating has 275 reviews but does not show a Towson address either. None of them made the 3-Pack.

One more detail stands out. Hardy closes at 5 p.m., while the roofing companies in our earlier example that ranked well were listed as open 24 hours. Longer hours can help, but a Towson address and a large review count can outweigh them.

Mistake 6: Leaving Services and Products Empty in Your Towson Google Business Profile

Hardy’s profile is also filled out more completely than most. In the Products section of their Google Business Profile, they list the work they do, including water softeners, gas line repair, and garbage disposals, each with its own photo and description. Most Towson service businesses leave this section blank, even though it takes an afternoon to complete and tells Google exactly what you offer.

Products section of Hardy Plumbing’s Google Business Profile

Hardy also uploads photos regularly and publishes Google Business Profile posts most weeks. The posts are not all sales pitches. Recent ones include a Happy Halloween message and an invitation to visit Hardy’s booth at a weekend zoo event, mixed in with posts about the services they offer. For a busy plumber, that is a realistic model: post about what your company is doing in the community, and come back to your services every few posts.

While you are in your own profile, check that these sections are complete:

  • Products, with a photo and description for each core service.
  • Services, matching the services listed on your website.
  • Areas served, naming Towson and the nearby towns you cover.
  • A booking or appointment link, if you take appointments online.

Mistake 7: Counting on Local Citations Alone to Reach the Towson Map Pack

Local citations matter, but the plumbing results show their limits. According to Ahrefs’ SERP overview for “plumber towson,” W.A. Gambrill Plumbing’s website has 661 backlinks from 585 referring domains. Most of those are local citations on directory sites like Expertise.com, Birdeye, BestProsInTown, CityLocalPro, and HomeBlue, where a business lists its name, address, and phone number. Those citations help the website reach the first page of organic results.

If citations were the whole story, W.A. Gambrill would be in the Map Pack too, and it is not. With 15 reviews, it cannot keep pace with Hardy’s 269, even from a better location. Whether you are a roofer or a plumber, reaching the Map Pack takes several things working together: a Towson address, a steady flow of reviews, an active Google Business Profile, and proper on-page and off-page SEO.

How a Towson Plumbing Landing Page Ranks Without Backlinks

On the organic side, Warrior Plumbing and Heating is the example worth studying. Their office is on Roland Avenue in Baltimore, not in Towson, yet their page ranks on the first page for “plumber Towson.” The reason is a local landing page: a page on their website built specifically around plumbing service in Towson, Maryland.

Earlier, AC Matthews showed what happens when a location page is copied from town to town. Warrior’s page shows the other side. Its meta title, “Local Plumbers in Towson, MD | 24/7 Emergency Plumbing,” leads with the service and the town. The meta description promises 24/7 emergency plumbing in Towson, and the H1 tells searchers right away that Warrior provides 24/7 emergency plumbing and heating services for Towson residents. Subheadings reinforce the location, and the body text references Towson 13 times.

The keyword is within reach for a page like this. Ahrefs gives “plumber towson” a keyword difficulty of 3 out of 100, with about 4 referring domains needed to rank in the top 10, and roughly 150 searches a month. Warrior’s Towson page has no backlinks at all according to Ahrefs, and it still ranks on page one with about 490 words of content.

ahrefs-keyword-difficulty-plumber-towson.png

The Towson mention count is not what makes the page work on its own. The page is built for Towson customers, with a clear service, a clear location, and a reason to call, which is what Google’s self-assessment questions look for. Copying a page and swapping the town name will not get the same result.

How to Rank a Handyman on the First Page in Towson, MD

A search for “handyman Towson” follows the same layout as the roofing and plumbing results: Local Services Ads at the top, then sponsored results, then the Google Map Pack. When we recorded this walkthrough, Ace Handyman Services Baltimore Metro held the top spot with 285 reviews, Six Hands Handyman was second with 31 reviews, and Mr. Handyman of Northern Baltimore County was third with 968 reviews. The AI Overview below the Map Pack once again drew from the businesses in the 3-Pack and the top organic results.

Google Map Pack and AI Overview for handyman in Towson, MD

Look at those review counts again. A handyman with 31 reviews outranks one with 968. Reviews and proximity still matter, but the handyman results point to a setting many business owners never check.

Mistake 8: Choosing the Wrong Primary Category for Your Towson Handyman Business

Every Google Business Profile has a primary category, the one category that tells Google what your business is. The businesses in the handyman 3-Pack all list a handyman category as their primary category. Further down, under More businesses, we found several handyman companies that do not:

  • Handyman On Call LLC has “handyman” in its name and 994 reviews, more than any business in the 3-Pack, but its primary category is general contractor.
  • Brown’s Handy Services is based right in Towson, but its primary category is lawn care service.
  • Handyman On Demand, based in Reisterstown, lists bathroom remodeler as its primary category.
Handyman On Call LLC’s Google Business Profile listed as a general contractor
Towson handyman listings with lawn care and bathroom remodeler primary categories

When someone searches for a handyman in Towson, Google looks for businesses that have told it they are handymen. A Towson address and solid reviews cannot make up for a profile that says you run a lawn care company. Brown’s Handy Services is the clearest example: it is located in Towson and has 45 reviews, more than Six Hands Handyman’s 31, yet it does not appear in the 3-Pack.

Checking yours takes a couple of minutes. In your Google Business Profile, open Edit profile and look at Business category. The first category listed is your primary category, and it should match the main service people search for. Add your other services as secondary categories, but keep the primary one as specific as possible. For a handyman, that means Google’s Handyman/Handywoman/Handyperson category rather than general contractor or remodeler.

That attention to detail is what separates the businesses that rank. The handyman results follow the same pattern as the roofers and plumbers: get your local SEO, on-page SEO, and off-page SEO structure right, build a genuine local landing page for each town you serve, and your Towson business will be in position to compete for the first page.

Eight Digital Marketing Mistakes Towson Business Owners Make and How to Fix Them

Here are the mistakes from all three walkthroughs in one place:

  1. Neglecting your Google Business Profile, including reviews, photos, hours, and weekly posts.
  2. Overlooking local citations on sites like the BBB, Yelp, and industry directories.
  3. Leaving Towson keywords out of your meta title, H1, subheadings, and page copy.
  4. Copying the same location page for every town you serve.
  5. Chasing backlink quantity instead of quality.
  6. Leaving the services and products sections of your Google Business Profile empty.
  7. Counting on local citations alone to get into the Map Pack.
  8. Choosing the wrong primary category for your business.
